Nikzad Nojoumi
Nikzad Nojoumi, born in 1941 in Kermanshah, is a prominent Iranian painter, graphic designer, and illustrator who currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. He received his B.A. in Painting in 1967 from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran, and his M.A. in Fine Arts in 1974 from City College of New York.
Nojoumi was one of the most prolific illustrators of children’s and young adult books at the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults in the 1970s, later focusing his professional career on painting. His works are mainly figurative and explore political, social, and psychological themes. He often uses personal photographs, and in more recent works draws on newspaper images, transforming them through collage into paintings.
His works are typically dark, critical, and infused with an ironic view of power and human issues. A key feature of his art is the combination of inner turmoil with damaged, identity-less figures.
Nojoumi has held numerous exhibitions in Iran and the United States, and his works are part of major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the British Museum in London. He also received an award at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy for illustrating The Crystal Sunflower, and won a national award in France in 1970.
Alongside his artistic career, he has been politically active, which led to restrictions after his return to Iran.
