Ardeshir Mohassess (1938–2008) was a prominent Iranian caricaturist, illustrator, and painter, born on September 9, 1938, in Rasht in a culturally active family. After showing early talent in visual arts, he completed his secondary education in Tehran and graduated in law from the University of Tehran in 1962. He briefly worked in government before abandoning his legal career to devote himself fully to drawing and caricature.

Mohassess became known in the 1960s through the publication of his works in books and magazines. His collaboration with Ahmad Shamloo in *Ketab-e Hafteh* marked a turning point, establishing him as a unique artistic voice. He later published political and social drawings in the *Kayhan* newspaper and briefly worked with *Ketab-e Jom’e*.

He is considered one of the founders of modern Iranian caricature, and critics such as Javad Mojabi have described him as a “pioneer of modern caricature in Iran.” His works, characterized by trembling, simple, sometimes geometric lines and sharp social critique, offered a direct depiction of Iranian society and culture. Mohassess often said, “I draw what I see; caricatures are documents of an era.”

In his artistic development, he was influenced by Roland Topor, the French illustrator. Many visual artists, including Davoud Shahidi and Ali Derakhshi, viewed him as an internationally significant artist and a theorist of graphic satire.

His family included notable artists as well: his sister, Irandokht Mohassess, a scholar of caricature, and his cousin, Bahman Mohassess, one of Iran’s leading painters and sculptors.

From the 1970s onward, his works were exhibited widely in Iran and abroad, including a 1975 exhibition at Graham Gallery in New York and a major presentation at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2006. His books *Ardeshir Mohassess: A Short History* and *Life in Iran* were published in the United States in 1994.

After the Iranian Revolution, he migrated to New York, where he lived for the rest of his life, struggling for years with Parkinson’s disease. He passed away on October 9, 2008, at the age of 70.
