Sido
Sido is a French artist born in 1972 in Orleans.
She discovered the world of art thanks to her godmother, a painter and sculptor herself. From her mother, a seamstress and embroiderer with the fingers of a fairy, she learned to sew and a deep appreciation for the value of patience and excellence in the creative process. But she was never destined for a career in art. As a child, she didn’t even dare to imagine that she could become a professional artist. She danced, sang, drew and dreamed of travelling. She was fascinated by the Super 8 films her father made in the 60s when he was a sailor in the Pacific. When she moved to Paris, it was to study advertising communication. She then studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. But her need to make her voice heard was strongest, and she became an actress.
In the mid-90s, she performed in the theatre, was active in Parisian artistic circles and became a model. She posed for photographers, painters and sculptors, gaining experience in oil painting, living model drawing and raku moulding. She was invited to exhibit with them. At the same time, she received her first private commission, a mural for the window of a Parisian establishment, La Belle Epoque. She draws inspiration from Gauguin’s paintings and creates a painting of a woman weaving flowers. She also meets the Chilean artist Alejandro Jodorowski, who introduces her to his fascinating world of psycho-magic. This interest in the psyche and the dreamlike, symbolic world is born.
In addition, she designed the costumes and make up for the roles in which she performed herself onstage. She collaborated on an interdisciplinary artistic experiment, Chrysalide, where she is responsible for character creation and design. She expanded her artistic horizons by exploring the world of primitive art, art brut, expressionism and art therapy. Technically, she felt constrained in creating the extraordinary volumes of the phantasmagorical characters she had in mind.
She acquired expertise in the techniques of creating hyper-realistic props and special effects for the cinema. On her first modeling class, she was asked to create a portrait of the person in front of her. It was an evidence, clear that her experience as a model and actress had given her an insight into the creative process of sculpture. The structure, the lines of force, the material, everything is so simple.
She made the decision to dedicate herself fully to this art form. In 2007, she exhibited her work in two exhibitions in Paris.
In 2009, during her pregnancy, she experienced a peculiar phenomenon of dissociation. People was addressing her as if she were someone else, someone who had not yet come into existence. The future mother. From the inside, she experiences a revolution. If she is not her body, who is she in reality? She embarks on an existential quest that will span several years. From this point forward, her work, performances, installations and sculptures seek to provide tangible substance of the existence of the embodied soul. The body as the costume of the soul.
How can the intangible be made tangible? How can an intimate sensory experience by nature be shared effectively? How can an emotional state be effectively conveyed?
She created the hybrid art collection “Costume de Soi, prêt supporter”. Exhibited at the Bastille Design Center, “Observatoire” won immediate recognition from the press and the public. Her work is provocative, situated somewhere between sculpture and costume. She was inspired by the work of sculptor Ron Mueck at the Fondation Cartier, and began collaborating on productions at the Théâtre du Châtelet, while working in her own studio. Anyway, she is aware of environmental considerations and develops techniques for herself which enable her to create her work using the most natural materials.
In 2014, she was selected for the esteemed MAC PARIS contemporary art fair. At the fair, she presented her Punching Ball, among other works. This exhibition marked the artist’s debut in the professional contemporary art scene. At the same time, she was selected to participate in the Figuration Critique art fair. She participated for several years. The connections she made at the event had a significant impact, and she gained recognition from her peers. She created several performances, was invited to participate to exhibitions in galleries and art centers such as Espace Christiane Peugeot in Paris. Furthermore, she continued to develop her unique universe and creative vision.
She became increasingly interested in the world of the psyche and sought a way to bridge the gap between art and her own understanding of human experience. She created the concept of “dreamlike realism” to express the intimate relationship between the visible world (matter) and the invisible world (energy, emotions, phantasmagoria, consciousness).
In 2017, she began representing faces while maintaining her vision of the body as a costume.
In 2020 and 2021, she participated in World Art Day by exhibiting at the Te Fare Natura museum in Moorea and at the Winkler gallery in Papeete, Tahiti. Her work is regularly presented in exhibitions and galleries in France and abroad.
