Alikhan Abdullahi
Alikhan Abdullahi was born in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, in 1962. He came to Tehran in the late 1960s and settled in a building as a janitor.
Alikhan has no formal training in art and is considered a self-taught artist or outsider. His interest and activity in sculpture has a long history, but the turning point in his work was when he succeeded in sculpting with a mixture of eggshell paste and seri. Most of his sculptures are created with this material.
His works consist of hybrid imaginary creatures; sometimes a combination of a human head and an animal body, sometimes a combination of different animal parts, and sometimes fundamentally bizarre creatures, with multiple human and animal heads on a vertical, column-like body. His works are reminiscent of ancient sculptures and mythological figures. The papier-mâché technique and the resulting color also contributed to this resemblance.
