He was born in Tehran in 1976. He studied painting, but before starting his career as a professional painter, he was active in cinema and experienced various professions such as portraiture. He held his first solo exhibition in 2003 at Bamdad Gallery. However, after this exhibition, he stayed away from painting for a while. He resumed his work as a painter in 2013. In the early stages of his work, he focused more on landscapes and created various views of Tehran. In later stages, he turned to human figures and painted a series of works inspired by the play "City of Stories" (written and performed by Bijan Mofid). The first characteristic of Kian Vatan's works is his interest in history, which is seen in the form of references to Iran's visual heritage. A kind of mystery can be recognized in both Kian Vatan's landscapes and figurative works. In the landscapes, this mystery was evident through the emphasis on empty spaces and the repetition of hatching. In the painter's figurative works, this feature can be seen by the artist's reference to the works of James Ensor, a Belgian painter. It seems that Vatan's emphasis is more on the matter or theme that is hidden behind the visual appearance. This feature has appeared in different forms in different periods of Kian Vatan's works.
