Mohammad Ehsai
Mohammad Ehsai was born in Qazvin in 1939 and studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts. Mohammad Ehsai’s works originate from the tradition with the characteristics of modernism. He was a professor of calligraphy at the University of Fine Arts, and for that reason, his calligraphy is still based on principles with the interweaving of words. This artist considered himself close to the Saqqakhane painters and moved from calligraphy to painting. Ehsai started painting paintings with the name “Allah” in 1954, which shows Islamic Sufism. Ehsai has been artistically active in the field of calligraphy, graphics and painting for more than 50 years and is internationally known and many of his works are preserved in the Metropolitan and British museums. His works have been continuously present in domestic and foreign auctions up to 146 times until 2021, and 69% of his works have been sold in international auctions. His most expensive work until 2021 was hammered at Bonams Middle East Modern and Contemporary Art auction for 411 thousand dollars in 2015 (October 2018).
